A House, Full of Stories
From Museum to Historic House
In 2012 the church will be entirely refurbished. While until recently, cupboards were converted into showcases to display art, now the process is being reversed: the showcases have been removed and the cupboards are once again cupboards. The idea is to restore the church’s original function and this is the guideline for the restoration. Visitors will experience the building as it was when it served as a parish church. Colour, light and interior will soon exude the atmosphere of the period in which the last regular masses were celebrated at the church, in the late 19th century.

During the final stage of restoration in 2012 not all the museum collection will be on display. A free audio tour is available explaining the various museum rooms. A 19th-century narrative in the church, and a 17th-century narrative in the Sael and the Canal Room.

A presentation explains the restoration process and the refurbishing of the interior, focusing on particular aspects of the restoration. In OPEN!Restauratie restorers comment on their work, explaining what they are doing with the centuries’ old interior and their vision for the museum.
