The simple confessional in Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder was put in place around 1740.

Confession is one of the seven sacraments, a cornerstone of the Catholic faith. The priest sat on the left side and listened to the confession; the believer knelt on the right while confessing his sins. Afterwards, the priest could forgive those sins, in Christ’s name. Confession is officially called the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation.
